Why Are We Doing This?

Social media, including Twitter, are transforming how we communicate. This record-setting event helps to highlight how these new technologies are impacting our global community, because the DEMOgala conference will focus on this and many other key technology topics of great importance. This event also is highlighting the very active technology industry in our state, including many professionals who find Twitter and other social media an important element in their business and technology innovation.

Other Facts:
  • With more than 5,500 software/hardware/IT services companies in Colorado, employing more than 50,000 people with an average salary of $88,000 (more than twice the median salary of all Coloradoans), the professionals in this industry – and their companies – are critical to the current and future economy of our state.
  • Colorado has more software engineers per capital along the Longmont-Boulder corridor than anywhere else in the nation.
  • There are a total of more than 125,000 professionals in Information Technology (including those who work directly for software/hardware/IT services companies) in the state, with a majority working in aerospace, finance, business services, and throughout all industries in the state.
  • Colorado is recognized as one of the top states in the nation for information technology. Colorado ranked third in high-tech workers per 1,000 private sector workers (with 83 out of every 1,000).
  • Colorado ranked 10th overall in the 2008 State New EconomyIndex, released by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.
  • Colorado earned several top 10 rankings for the index's 29 individual indicators. Specifically, the state ranked third in workforce education, fourth in patents, fourth in IPOs, fourth in venture capital, fifth in job churning, sixth in high-tech jobs, sixth in online population, ninth in information technology professionals, 10th in migration of U.S. knowledge workers, 10th in investor patents, 10th in investment in R&D, and 10th in scientists and engineers.
  • In addition to being a top IT economy, Colorado is a major user of technology. The share of Colorado households with computers - 70 percent - ranks fifth-highest in the nation.
  • A nationwide study released in 2006 by Sperling's Best Places recognized Denver as the third-best city for teleworking among a group of similarly-sized metro areas. Availability of broadband Internet access was a key factor in the study that also recognized Boulder as the nation's top spot for teleworking in the small metro area group. Indeed, Forbes magazine recognized Denver as the 8th-most "wired" city in the U.S. in 2009. The cities were evaluated on criteria such as percentage of high-speed Internet users and availability of public wireless hot spots.
